LA Alternative Magazine Review:
"You wouldn’t think it, but the incessant sunshine of Southern California is exactly what you need to grow a Black Pine—a small, irregularly-shaped pine native to Japan. The Black Pine is a common choice for bonsai for its extroirdinarily twisted, green needles and its picturesque silhouette, however, it can reach a height of 25 feet if left to grow.

It makes sense then that the L.A. foursome by the same name is starting to outgrow its previous, under-the-radar confines in fits and starts. The band has gone from months-long studio hibernation earlier this year, to playing nearly everywhere in the city this month.

The Black Pine’s limbs—Mitch Cichocki (vocals, guitar), Emma Ka Cichocki (drums), Jason Bacher (bass) and DNA (keyboards)—have recently been trimmed from a five-piece when the group lost its former lead singer.

The band’s Sexlife With Flowers E.P. release on L.A.’s The New Black imprint remains an excellent example of their haunting, snail’s pace rock ambience. Guitar chords come out of ether, grow into an incessant chord progression, and suddenly duet vocals, or electric piano, sometimes a lush section of strings blooms from sparse beginnings. The Black Pine shows patience and measured angst with an emotional vocab that most bands this side of the Atlantic just can’t master. Dark songwriting that doesn’t aspire to goth, and the ability to conjure deep sadness without gettin’ emo on everyone, makes the Black Pine a rare species these days."

Our E.P. " The Sexlife of Flowers" is for sale in MP3 format in the Melodies section. It is also for sale on I-Tunes.

The members of Black Pine played as Sarah Silverman's backup band for her one women comedy show "Jesus is Magic" at The Second City Studio Theatre in Hollywood and The Canon Theater in Beverly Hills. This show has recently been made into a major motion picture.

Under the Radar Magazine Review:

The Black Pine: Sexlife of Flowers E.P.

"With Sexlife of Flowers, this LA five piece strikes a chord somewhere between French pop (one of the vocalists is in fact French) and something much darker. There's almost a Nick Cave brooding presence to the bands dual female vocals and sparse instrumentation. The band is currently recording its debut full-length album. Expect to see more from The Black Pine."
